Skydive Safety

In skydiving, as in any other risky endeavor there exists a direct relationship between your knowledge, skill and attitude, and your chances of survival. Never stop learning.

Skydive Big Sky employs a rigorous maintenance program on all of our equipment. All parachutes are equipped with AAD (automatic activation devices) manufactured by Cypres and Vigil. At Skydive Big Sky we have always owned and operated our own aircraft. We do not lease aircraft from other outfits who have only their bottom line in mind. There has never been an airplane crash or major mechanical failure with any of our airplanes.

Skydiving incidents on the whole are very rare (about 1 in every 80,000) jumps. We go to great lengths to make your first skydive as safe as possible. Due to the nature of the sport of skydiving, it would be foolish to think that there are no inherent risks involved. (After all, we are jumping out of airplanes). We have an excellent safety record, and WE LOVE TO BRAG!!!! Call and ask about it.

Picking the right parachute is more complex than you might imagine. With well over 200 main canopies to choose from, this decision can be harder than buying a house. Today, there is a huge spectrum of canopies, from extremely high performance parachutes to downright sluggish ones. There are some excellent selections for the novice and intermediate jumper in the mid to lower performance range.

All of our skydiving systems (rigs) are of the highest quality, and are maintained by FAA certified parachute riggers. All of our rigs contain a backup parachute which is thoroughly and frequently checked and re-packed.

According to USPA (United States Parachuting Association) in 2000, there were 3,500,000 skydives made with 30 fatalities in the U.S. (and the majority of these fatalities are from experienced jumpers being too cocky in their safety). Therefore, the odds of a skydiving fatality is 1 out of 116,666 skydives. For further statistics on the sport of skydiving, check out USPA's Statistics Page. According to the National Safety Council, the odds of a fatality due to a motor vehicle are 1 out of 6,212. This shows that skydiving is 1,878% safer than driving/riding in a vehicle

The skydiving enthusiasts must bear in mind the importance of skydiving lessons that their learned instructors give them. A good skydive is possible only when all skydiving lessons are followed to the letter by the students. The skydiving lessons differ for people who want to try tandem skydiving and accelerated free fall.

Some very basic skills are a must before an enthusiast can prove his or her prowess in parachute skydiving. The four basics of parachute skydiving are: fundamental safety, free fall plan, parachute usage and manipulation and finally safe landing. Anyone who wants to defy gravity has to absorb these essentials before he or she is allowed to jump from a plane.

Like any other adventure sport - Parachute skydiving can be a thoroughly enjoyable experience if the basic skills are learnt well. The skills are essential not only for the thrills but also for protecting oneself while parachute skydiving.

There has never been an airplane crash or major mechanical failure with any of our airplanes. The reason for this is pretty basic: we maintain our aircraft properly and we do not hire amateurs to fly them.
